A Bit About Me

I, Mara Enciu Garrett, am originally from Romania. In addition to living in the United States, I have lived in Papua New Guinea and have served in Romania, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and Mexico. My background is in education and training adults, particularly around subjects related to domestic violence and supporting survivors of abuse.

In both a professional and volunteer capacity, I have worked in direct services for survivors and marginalized communities, locally and overseas.

I believe that change begins with educating ourselves and engaging with difficult issues in order to learn, empathize, and support others, especially underserved communities near home and in other areas of the world. Only then can we serve and support people in a way that addresses their needs, and not our agendas.

Training Experience

2024

2020 to 2022

Spring and Summer 2018

2017 - 2019

Currently, I work for Advance CTE as a project coordinator on various projects and initiatives. Prior to this, I was a project coordinator for the Communications team on the Interstate Bridge Replacement program, managing tasks, writing content, and proofreading with an equity lens.

As a confidential  advocate for survivors of abuse, I was co-located in an Oregon Department of Human Services Office, supporting both survivors and ODHS staff. I trained new advocates as well as ODHS employees and other community partners on domestic and sexual violence, trauma, and safety planning.

I created domestic violence training and facilitated this training at GracePoint Christian Church in Vancouver, Washington and in Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea for expatriates. In addition, I worked with local leaders in Nomane, Chimbu, Papua New Guinea in how to present abuse to their respective communities and how to support survivors.

At Multnomah University, I trained new student employees in the Admissions office. I also trained staff and faculty who were supervisors of student employees, while working as an assistant in the Student Employment and Human Resources office.
